A historic year is upon us. On June 1, 2018 we officially changed our name to American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). I am honored to be the 1st President to serve the Southwest Chapter of the newly named ASSP. Everyone by now knows the history of this storied organization which began in 1911. What you may not know is that our chapter began in 1937, only 26 years after national. A tremendous history for a volunteer organization and none of it would be possible without you. It is no secret that we would not have come this far if it weren’t for the countless number of volunteer safety professionals who took time away from their families, jobs and hobbies and dedicated valuable time to this chapter. I speak for the entire Executive Committee and current volunteers by saying thank you.
We had a tremendously productive 2017-2018 chapter year. We moved our technical meetings to a new venue and saw increased attendance. We were able to host a larger than ever PDC at Grapevine Convention Center. The PDC drew speakers from all over the country and the new venue allowed us to offer concurrent breakout sessions all day long, giving the attendees choices on various safety subjects. We held 2 social events during the year, a breakfast at Original Pancake House in January and another big turnout at the RoughRiders Baseball Game in June for officer installation.
Last but certainly not least, our chapter was honored by Society with Platinum Chapter Status for the 3rd year in a row! Not an easy achievement and again this award reflects the dedication by our volunteers to serve the chapter.
But we are not slowing down. Our goals for this upcoming year are higher than ever. We are once again on the move for our technical meetings. The new venue is La Hacienda Ranch in Dallas off Preston, just north of Campbell. This venue can hold up to 100 people and gives us a private room with great food! Our meetings will be standardized to 2pm the 3rd Thursday of the following months; August, November, February and May. This allows our members to mark their calendars in advance. Our 2019 PDC date is set as well, Thursday April 11, 2019 at the Grapevine Convention Center. Please mark your calendars for that event as we once again expect an outstanding slate of speakers, as well as the largest group of exhibitors ever.
Please take the time to visit our new website at https://sw.assp.org/ There you will find links to upcoming events, job postings and our up to date social media sites.
We want maximum participation from our membership and hope you will use every opportunity to recruit new members into this storied chapter as well.
